TheYoungGardenersProgram focuses on existing after school initiatives geared toward students in grades 1-4. It establishes on-site organic gardens and teaches children how to tend to the produce they grow. TheYoungGardenersProgram (YGP) turns schoolyards into living classrooms where curiosity blooms, vegetables grow, and young people discover their power to care for themselves, each other, and the earth. This year, GardeningKnowHow’s School and Community Garden Sponsorships program was fortunate enough to help support 20 gardens with $1,000 each. TheYoungGardenersProgram is a project of Galveston’s Own Farmers Market (GOFM). We aim to bring the benefits of growing food, eating healthy, being outdoors to local children, one school at a time, and in so doing transform the health of Galveston Island. TheYoungGardenersprogramme has 10 plots, including a number of raised beds for each young person to take ownership of during the growing season, along with their families and our lead gardener, to sow seeds and plant crops. TheYoungGardeners Club, run by GardenAdvice.co.uk, is a unique initiative designed to support young individuals under 16 years old whose parents or guardians are members of GardenAdvice. The club provides opportunities for young people to learn gardening skills... “Normally, theYoungGardenersProgram beds are planted in a cover crop and closed for the summer, but we decided to keep planting them for the nutritious, locally grown food the community needs,” McAuliffe said. The program begins the first week in May and runs every Wednesday for six weeks until mid-June. Once school begins again in the fall, meetings continue on Wednesdays after school until it’s time to winterize the garden, usually around the beginning of November. The lots, totaling about 14,000 square feet, will be used to enhance the group’s existing gardeningprogram.
